Progressions

Cartwheel Progression Pt.3

In this series, Coach Carl demonstrates progressions to perform the Cartwheel, one of the most basic and common gymnastics and tumbling movements.

In this video, Carl demonstrates the frontal cartwheel using what we learned with the side cartwheel. First, we have to get completely vertical by dicussing the proper set-up with the arms and legs to lunge and reach into the movement. Then, by changing the start and finish positions we will get the frontal cartwheel.

In this video, Carl continues to break down the frontal, or squared-hip, cartwheel. Carl begins by starting a cartwheel with squared hip, but finishing in the side cartwheel on the arc facing the opposite direction.  Next, Carl starts the squared hip cartwheel and finishes again in the side cartwheel, but this time on the straight line.  Finally, Carl demonstrates the squared hip cartwheel start to finish, on the straight line.

CrossFit Games Breakdown - Regionals Workouts - Pt.1

With the 2011 CrossFit Games Regionals Workouts announced ahead of the competition this year, we are fortunate enough to get a chance to break down some of the key gymnastics movements for you with some final coaching tips and cues. In this video, Carl talks about the Handstand Push Up, and how to take it from chest against the wall as you've trained with the GWOD and skill transfer doing it with your to back against the wall.

All the practice you've had with chest against the wall to emphasize initiating movement through sending your shoulders forward into the tripod position is KEY even with your back against the wall, not only to maximize power but also to preserve your form and not over extend under load or fatigue.  That said, setup proper and find your ideal shoulder position so you can move fluidly between a lockout and tripod position. Trust your training to make every rep count.

CrossFit Games Breakdown - Regionals Workouts - Pt.2

With the 2011 CrossFit Games Regionals Workouts announced ahead of the competition this year, we are fortunate enough to get a chance to break down some of the key gymnastics movements for you with some final coaching tips and cues. In this video, Carl talks about the Handstand Push Up, and how to take it from chest against the wall as you've trained with the GWOD and skill transfer doing it with your to back against the wall.

Another KEY cue is to maintain proper head position - don't look at the ground as it will certainly compromise your position.  Look off into the distance, and even look away from the ground towards your toes to guarentee that you send your heels towards the wall even if you go with a kip.  As we've taught you on GWOD, kipping is one of those tools you can and should use for the right PURPOSE - and in this case a short kip can give you more pop while a big kip can help you reset your position if you are fatigued.  Strategize with your tools from your training, it could save you precious time and energy from having to coming down and then kick up to restart again.
